Folded into my pod. [Sep. 4th, 2007|06:39 pm]

I went to my mom's house for Labor Day weekend, where I spent most of the time sitting on her couch and staring into space. I saw a lot of old friends while I was home, heard some gossip and news, and even got some cheese-selling in at the farmer's market!

The local stores in Rhinebeck (my hometown) have been selling French Milk for a while now, and as a result, most of the town who knows me or my mom have been pretty buzzed about the book, and it's new publishing dealio (small town). I have another mention in Publisher's Weekly coming out soon, and I received lots of kudos from old friends and neighbors. Comic artists who I love and respect have given me props, and it's very gratifying to hear ex-boyfriends say "I saw your book in the store." It's all very nice, of course, but I'm just so awkward when people congratulate me and compliment my work. I realize how much I measure my worth based on my accomplishments, and the expectations seem to be intimidatingly high. It's just a bit much to compute, what with also starting a new school and everything. Anyway, I sound stupid and selfish fretting over such a positive bunch of stuff. Sorry.

I drove back up to White River Junction today, to make sure I have some time to settle into my apartment and learn the area before I start school (at the end of this week). So now I'm puttering around my little apartment, and trying to get psyched up to make lots of friends and not flip out and turn into a nervous wreck for the first day of school. It helps to be in my own space, surrounded by my stuff and able to work. Next stop: REVISING MY BOOK FOR PUBLICATION!

Yeah, it's a small place with a lot of stuff in it, but I NEEEED that stuff!

Here's the main room from the opposite direction. You can see the kitchen area, and my flowers (a housewarming present from John's parents!)

Here's where I made my little gallery of artwork. I also appropriated my mom's old farmer's market chalkboard (on which is featured a sketch of one of my scary neighbors, who has no teeth and keeps rats on his shoulder. I don't know. I don't want to know.). The door pictured leads to:

...The bathroom! Not very exciting, but still...

My bedroom. I have a lot of stuffies for a 22 year old...

This is the view from my windows. The train yard is behind my house, and I can hear trains roll in every once in a while. It's very nice.

And this is one last shot of my studio space, which I'm particularly excited about. Behind my computer, you can see the hulking form of my new (AMAZING) printer.

Haha, that was my reaction as well, having just moved in to a teeensy studio apartment. The place looks gorgeous -- and I love your quilt!

Looks like you've done an excellent job arranging the new apartment. Is that an aloe in the window?

As far as the dealing with the positive attention: It took me forever to even mumble "thanks" for compliments. Now I try to channel the "I really don't know what to say" and embarrassment into a humble gratitude when someone notices my work. A sincere "thank you" often conveys that best. If you're fretting over the positive attention it means your head hasn't swelled up to the size of a watermelon (now there's one for you to draw, Lucy Watermelonhead).

Oh, wait, must set my icon just to tease you.

Lucy, I'm almost done reading "French Milk" and have been enjoying it tremendously. I also really enjoyed "HEART: Seed Snow Circuit." Thanks for trading with me at MoCCA!

I'm so excited that you are up at CCS this year and I consider myself among the many people who are eager to see what you come up with. (Ha ha--adding to the stress you just complained about) Just keep your nose down and keep drawing! ;)

And I agree with Raina, your apartment looks HUGE!

Hey, It looks downright dreamy. Particularly your bedroom. I have a thing for quilts these days. And airstream trailers.
I bought the same shcmancy printer too! It works good, but I didn't get near as much use out of it as I thought (thats what I get for quitting art school).
Tell us how school goes. Going to cartoon school in Vermont is a bit of a thing with me. Like if all else fails, I can always try that.
