Yesterday we had Alec Longstreth in for our visiting artist session. He was a dynamo of energy and enthusiasm! His dedication was really inspiring. What a guy. He gave a great presentation on his methods for producing his heaps of high-quality work, and came back later that evening to give a technical coloring demo, where we got to see some of the pages from Aaron Renier's new book (which were amaaazing). After over 10 hours of constant, enthusiastic CCS visiting-artist-ing, Alec was still clinging to consciousness. Bravo! He also brought original pages from his in-progress graphic novel, Basewood, which were so beautiful and intricate, that they were a little eye-crossing.
I've contemplated and discussed comic work schedules with other artists; mine changes depending on the project, the time of year and the mood I'm in. Alec works on such a focused schedule, it kind of makes me wonder how he ever gets to the bank, or goes grocery shopping. It's made me very conscious, today, of how I spend my time. (Today: bank, car repair shop, post office, gas station, grocery store, lunch, guitar hero, then from 3 o clock onward (for ten hours): comics... with a break to watch "House.") If I didn't have those distractions, though, I think I'd sit for hours at my drawing table and stare into the white abyss of an empty page and feel my body age. Plus, those kinds of everyday tasks gnaw at me while I try to work, so it's good for me to get them out of the way.
ANYwayyy, it's two o'clock in the morning, and I'm still up, but I got FOUR PAGES done today! It doesn't make up for my total slowdown this semester, but at least I'll probably be able to sleep tonight. |

Alec is truly amazing, that's cool he was up there.
I admire anyone who can draw, as I'm terrible at it, but I admire someone who draws on a NYC subway train WHILE STANDING even more.

I go to the bank/laundromat/etc on my official "breaks." Getting out of the apartment is one of my best motivators!
