New friends and new comics! [Nov. 12th, 2008|10:17 pm]
Previous Entry Add to Memories Tell a Friend Next Entry
Coming back from my book tour, I realized that an entire month-and-a-half of my semester was just totally devoured.
I'm up to my neck in nearly-done projects for school and anthologies, and I'm chained to my desk until they're done. Boooo.

But I'm so happy to be featured on the LJ main page, and so thrilled to be getting nice comments from new readers!

I've been keeping this journal for about 8 years now (since I was 16-- there's some awful teen angst if you go back far enough.
I do not recommend it.). It's so crazy to think about how long I've done this, and how great it's been for me.

I love love love getting friended by new people, so please do. I haven't had a moment to reply to inquiring comments, so please by all means, friend me if you'd like.

Here's a comic I drew today, when I couldn't stand to look at my "serious" projects for a second longer.
Look! I'm actually wearing my glasses for a whole 3 panels!

Alinea

I swear: there is nothing made up in this comic, though I wish I was funny enough to come up with some of this stuff as a joke. That one on the antennae? FOR REAL. The smoke pillow? I KID YOU NOT.

That ridiculousness said, though, the meal was probably the best meal I've ever eaten in my life. It was technically my dating-for-three-years anniversary dinner with John (though our anniversary was two months ago, when he made the reservation). He's such a good sport to break free of his financially responsible and health-food-minded psyche to go to some crazy pyrotechnical food extravaganza with me.

Save up for a year or two and go there for dinner. It's like a fancy-food-amusement park!

I spent last Sunday evening with my little jam-comics club. We've started a blog to post all our finished jam comics.
I like asking John if he can tell which panels are mine. Can you tell?

I start my teaching job, tomorrow! I'm doing an eight-week comics class for 3rd, 4th and 5th graders. Every week they get a new project, so I drew handouts for each week. Check out the first five:

(I'm really proud of "The Bed Head." Also, my Harry Potter cave art. I'm loving that my first assignment as teacher is for my students to make fan comics.)

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Aaaand I drew four more pages of my short comic "horror" story, Stress Eating.
Stress Eating Director's Commentary: There are a couple little Chicago references in there (even though it's supposed to be happening in New York); Quenchers is a real bar. It's one of my favorites in the city, for their cider on tap, free popcorn and attractive bartenders. Charles is also a real bartender, but he doesn't work at Quenchers in real life. We met him during halloween, when he bought us a cab ride just because he liked our costumes, thus saving my poor go-go-booted feet from walking all across town.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

That's all, I think, for my art pile today.
The internet has been so full of news and intrigue and wonder these last couple of days.
Or maybe it just seems better than usual, because I'd rather stare at a kitten photo than do my darned work.

Man, comic classes as a child would have been awesome. Your students are extra lucky to get such awesome handouts. I can suppose I can settle for mooching off of graphic novels class in college, but it's just not the same.

...Eating at a funky, fabulous, time to empty all of my piggybanks restaurant has just gone of the list of things to do at some point in my life list.

David Essman doesn't have no live journal

Nice teaching handouts! ... although I think it's pretty unfair(because I am jealous oh course) that they get to take a comics class in elementary school.. To think I could've been making jam comics in elementary school..

Wow, that post totally made my day! Thanks for all the great reading material! :-D

Everything is fantastic in its own way; I wish you'd done workshops in my school when I was a kid! And the Alinea comic, brilliant. You'd be a fun person to go to a restaurant with; Stuart is nice about me drawing all the food I'm eating and writing recipe notes, but I think it weirds him out a little bit. ;-)

I do not want to sound like an unadventurous cynic, but I would rather eat a huge bowl of meat stew and dumplings than some weird shit served on a smoky pillow.

Which I bet they charge like a million bucks for.

Bah humbug.

I think you'll find that it's the hyssop that makes all the difference. I adore hyssop, don't you?

Ohgod, that FOOD! It makes me stare in amazed and thrilled disbelief.

Hi, I'm one of the new people. :) *waves*

That restaurant is ten kinds of crazy. I need to save up enough money to go there sometime, just seeing the pillow of smoke would make it worth it!

I'll probably print out the handouts, translate them to Norwegian and give them to my little sister, because they are amazing! I just spent 20 minutes trying to draw the different emotions and I can't even draw. :)

Similarly, I've eaten at Heston Blumenthal’s restaurant, The Fat Duck. The menu is based on molecular gastronomy. It cost a fortune but was by far the best meal I've ever eaten. All kinds of crazy dishes; snail porridge, egg and bacon ice cream etc… Once in a life time stuff.

I am a culinary student at The Art Institute of Colorado, and in a couple quarters, that is exactly the kind of stuff my favourite chef is going to teach us to do! For our last open house he made these raw "eggs" that were actually mango and coconut, gelatin "mimosas" with orange puree and homemade pop rocks that tasted like champagne, and an "eggs Benedict" that was the same size as 15 dimes stacked together...really amazing stuff...he even teaches how to make fruit caviar!
And now I am jealous, I really want to visit this restaurant!
Great work! I love it!

For those of us who can't afford Chez Panisse, there's Cafe Fanny . I ate there on a trip to Berkeley this summer... delicious Cafe au Lait and Croque Monsieur...
BTW, I'm a new reader of your journal.

Just an FYI you're gonna get a lot of "But mine doesn't look like yours." You're gonna spend a lot of your time telling them "Yours isn't supposed to look like mine. It's supposed to be yours." I really like the handouts you made! They look really nice and well thought out.
