Rememba me? [Apr. 24th, 2009|02:20 am]

I am so tired that I am basically only capable of doing the following:

In the last three weeks, I've been to opposite coasts of the country, working and talking and cooking and selling and meeting all sorts of great folks. It's been lovely, but I am EXHAUSTED.

My mother's big Easter party at home was great and foodly, and included a reunion with my best friend (and former beau) from high school (the criminally talented Lawrence Gullo, who's new joint comic project with his fiancee looks to be great stuff: Baratarian Boy). Here we are looking sun-dappled and slightly tipsy with Easter cheer:

A day after the cleanup, I Amtracked down to NYC to promote French Milk and speak at the Fashion Institute of Technology, where I gave two book presentations in one day, and stressedly sweated straight through my carefully chosen outfit (they know fashion, those students!).

I also got to briefly meet with Pamela Falk, the incredibly nice lady who's acquired the film rights to my book. (!!!) Then it was a quick stop at the Macaron store, and back up to fly back to Chicago in time to unpack, pack again, and teach my weekly comics class, only to fly out with John the following morning to Portland, Oregon for the Stumptown Comics Festival!

The festival went well! Lots of great people, good sales, and Portland is very pretty. I'm always so overwhelmed at conventions, but at the same time, it's really such crazy fun.

We stayed with our incredibly lovely hosts, Erika Moen and Matt Nolan (and their invisible housemate, who we never saw ONCE in the near full week we spent camped out in their living room!).

Sunday Morning?

Erika and I did a panel on autobio comics, collaboration, and... sexiness?
Anyway, we had fun, though I can't vouch for the audience!

And, naturally, there were the post-convention antics. Here is one of the few slightly-less embarrassing photos of myself from Sunday evening Kartoonist's Kareoke.
I think I'm singing "Shoop," here, by the inimitable (as I discovered) Salt 'n Pepa.

Kartoonist Kareoke

It was a busy weekend, but we did manage to see a little of Portland after the con, including the famous Powell's Books, where I tracked down my book among the gajillions of others. Nothing like a crazy-enormous bookstore to make an author feel slightly insignificant, but man, it was pretty cool to see my book all facing-out on the shelf like that!

French Milk @ Powell's

See my flickr for just a sickening amount of further photos from the trip. Highlights to look for: doing oyster shots with Maris Wicks, Erika and I invoking the spirit of Miss Spider, Alec Longstreth demonstrating the true reason behind growing out his beard (to hold tiny umbrellas), a couple photos of our backstage tour at Periscope Studios, Joe Quinones and Liz Prince putting their hearts and souls into the groove, and many upon many photographic depictions of cartoonists behaving drunkenly and loving kitties behind glass.

Now it's back to work, and regularly scheduled hunched-over scribbling! Working vacation overrrr... for now.

Well, I was a tiny bit jealous 'cause I missed-out on Stumptown this year... but all those other layers of awesome you've slathered-on make me wanna curl-up with one of those round cartoon bombs (with the sparkly fuses) and just explode!

But for realzies good job, lady. Well done :D

I couldn't help but notice that it looks like your book is shelved with books about France and not in a catchall "GRAPHIC NOVELS!" section? How incredibly novel and interesting!

I work at Barnes & Noble...

It's not shelved in graphic novels there either, it's shelved with travel writing.

I just wanted to say "Howdy" and let you know I am now a part of the legions that adore your work. I found you through Erika Moen, I am the devilish photographer that keeps covering her in things (coming soon, marshmallow cream!) and was really fascinated by the Escher-like quality of your sexy poster collaboration not to mention the impressive variety. It's really amazing in person. In general I just think you're groovy and very insipring.

Long time reader, first time comment. Heya! Any chance by any chance that theres a chance that you'll sell your and Erica's a*maz*ing poster online, by chance? Cuz, um, I've already got a space picked out on my wall....

You're great, thanks for the pretty things to look at and allowing me to close my eyes and dream about being an artist every so once in a while...

Hey you!
I'm glad to see your update. Sadly I'm still broke (and in debt) so i have yet to buy French Milk :(

I love the last picture with you & your kitty.

Oh and my little sister (age 9) has a lot of talent and I REALLY think she's going to have her own comic strip and books. I'll post a picture of her latest work soon. I think you'll find it rather interesting ;)

floorspace in Maine

(Link)

If you don't already have a some floorspace reserved in Maine, you are welcome to a swath of ours.

Depending on our luck we'll either have one space in Portland or a space in Portland and a space in Freeport by Friday the 15th. Our current abode is humble, but convenient to everything.

Either way, we'll be dropping by your table on the 17th. :)

Lucy Knisley

(Link)

Sometimes I refuse of reading classic literature and flip to wonderful comics of Lucy Knisley. Her light, interesting and vivid imagination has hooked me and I just can not stop reading, reading and reading… by the way… the drawing style is quite unusual …
