I posted a few more pages on my:

Paris Journal

This is likely the second to last post of the Paris Journal-- there are only four pages left.

Some other stuff:
John and I drank some wine and made exquisite corpses the other night. I'm slowly getting him to draw more, mostly because I think his drawings are hilarious and great, but also because I think it's good for everyone to draw.

It's one of those things, like singing, that most of us were taught to stop doing after a certain age, and I think we're the worse for it. This societal halting of creative acts seems really harmful-- to cease doing the things that human beings have done naturally since our earliest existence.

And the association between singing and drawing for enjoyment and immaturity or childhood, makes the fact that I (and most of my friends) never stopped and now spend my adult life doing mostly one or the other seem a little degraded.

Anyway, look at that little worm-fingered-elf thing John drew! Genius.
I also like that it's hard to tell, in parts, which are drawn by a professional drawer and which are drawn by a computer engineer who nearly never draws.
Check 'em out.

I had to go to the doctor today, to take some advantage of my fancy, grownup health insurance (actually it's John's, and he's the grownup, but I'm his domestic partner/freeloader, so I get it too). I don't care for the doctor's. I have, not only once, spilled my pee sample cup on myself.

So I came home, finished my work, and then did a tiny comfort-watercolor of this guy.

Sorry, spider-haterz. I'd hate it if I was looking at a picture of a snake, so I sympathise. Snakes are cute in theory, but I would rather be in a cage with a polar bear than a boa constrictor.
I can't even watch that scene in Indiana Jones without convulsions of horror.
But spiders? Those guys are okay by me. I just love those goofy eyeballs!

Those group drawings are AMAZING. For serious.
The spider is a villain, though. Such bad arachnophobia.

Man, I KNOW. Well, not about spideys, but dude, if snakes were as prevalent in, like, houses, as spiders are, I would have died of fright long ago... I read that there are some places where snakes are EVERYWHERE and just COME INTO YOUR HOUSE aaaauuuuuugh.

HAHA! Tiny penis!!!!! These are so great.
Also, spider! So great!
I can attest that snakes are pretty cool. I had my friend's pet snake around my shoulders one day at work and it was pretty awesome. It pretty much just wanted to be warm and hang out, also they are sooooo smooooth.
Of course I could never feed a snake a live mouse, I think I would probably cry myself to death! So no snakes for me.

Aw, John is so thrilled that you like his tiny penis....
Wait...

Snake story --> shuddderrrr.

Man, I really like cartoon snakes, and drawings of snakes, and I'm totally fascinated with them, but seriously, it's one of those things that makes me lie awake at night, totally frozen, because there might be a snake under the covers with me aaaauuugh.

Um, but anyway. Yeah, I've heard they're cool hangout pals.
My seventh grade science teacher used to make us watch when she fed her cornsnake mice. It was awful. But then she'd take it out of the tank, with the mouse bulge all... bulgy.. and pass him around the room. It was at this point that I would go to the office and call my mom to come get me and take me home because I was dropping out of school forever.

I feel the same way about drawing; I have all these friends who don't draw and when they say "oh, I can't draw at all" I'm like 'but you should try! cus it's fun!' it doesn't always have to be about doing it well.

also I am afraid of spiders, but that one is really cute. It might be the cowboy hat. I find the big, fuzzy ones way less creepy than things like daddy longlegs.

I knowwww--- Everyone can draw! It's mark-making! It just sickens me that we piss on people's confidence in that skill so much-- that people can feel so intimidated by the art world, I guess.
I used to have all these friends, when I was a kid, who would draw with me, and we'd make these awesome art projects together. But now it's like they've totally forgotten that they ever were into that. Weirdest part is that they were often just as skilled or better than me at making a good drawing, and now they're so crippled with fear and out of practice that they've actually gotten worse than they were, because the line's lost all confidence and joy. Bah, it's too bad.

I love spiders so much and that picture is one of the best things I've ever seen! I'm going to the county fair tomorrow, and that dude is totally getting me in the right mood. Yeeehaw!

(I've lived in NYC for the last five years, but I'm currently visiting my parents in Montana, where I grew up.)

i hadn't drawn in so long and my friend who didn't draw at all kept telling me to do it more and i said only if he did it too. ever since then he has been drawing everyday and it rules so much. my favorite type of art is by people who really honestly think they can't draw. did you use one of those faber castell pitt pens or something else?

I used to have a great friend who, whenever people were in her house, would sit them down and put markers and pens and paper and plates of apples and cheese and bread and wine out in front of them. And even the people who would protest that they "can't draw" would find themselves doodling up crazy business, and being amazed at themselves.
That was the best part of teaching cartooning-- overcoming the "but I can't draw" hang-up. Sez who?

And I like spiders just fine when they are wearing cowboy hats. Otherwise they get the shoe.

Cat farts!

Also, your spider picture is oddly therapeutic for me. It sort of makes me feel better about spiders. I had a horrifying encounter with one last summer, and took pictures. You can see them here if you are interested! http://slashaddict.livejournal.com/358418.html

And all I have to say about your acceptance of spiders is...arachnophobia (the movie, not the fear)

I don't like spiders OR snakes. Whenever I think snakes I think of Anaconda

This time, it's wonderful and delicious copyedit time in Paris.

July 23rd, you took the train to the:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ch%C3%A2telet_%E2%80%93_Les_Halles_(Paris_RER)

It's wonderful because the métro station there is part of the BD adventures of Valérian and Laureline and part of the title of volume 9 in their long series:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M%C3%A9tro_Ch%C3%A2telet,_Direction_Cassiopeia

July "untitled" is delicious because of the typo in a cheese:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brillat-Savarin_cheese

I didn't know this one at all. Tomorrow, I'm rushing to a fromagerie in Montreal to try some.

I love that you think like i do, that it's good for everyone to draw, I have always told my kids that it doesn't matter how well they draw, just that they do, because it's good for the soul.
A big hello from Australia,I have loved every minute of your trip to Paris, thank you so much for sharing it with us.
