Journal Parisien! [Aug. 20th, 2009|03:34 pm]

Here it is! The last entry in my Paris Journal:

Paris Journal

Saaad, now that it's over.

Director's commentary:
The whole thingamajob was drawn in this little homemade notebook:

I used thick cardboard for the cover, which I covered with a few pieces of fabric I had lying around, and then sew-bound the pages together with thick, waxed thread, reinforcing it all with duct tape. There were 40 pages, total, and I filled the whole book! I really recommend doing these for your own travels. Now I have this totally home-made book that will help me to remember the trip, years from now. It was hard to keep up with drawing and writing for an hour or two (almost) every day, while on vacation with John, but I'm glad I did it.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I'm traveling again, tomorrow, back home to New York for the wedding of my closest friend from my teen years. It rocks my world to have someone to whom I was so close, doing such a grown-up thing. It still feels like it was last week that we were staying up until four AM to watch old episodes of Kids in the Hall, and drawing conversations back and forth instead of doing our homework for math class the next morning.
(PS: I failed math, but drawing conversations back and forth turned out to be more important for my future career. Still, I sometimes wish I could remember what a "polynomial" is... NOT. Stay in school, kidz!)
I wish the Maths you learn in secondary school (that would be your high school I guess) was more applied and tied in to real world stuff. The stuff you learn in college is way more applied but I can see what you mean (but then again I'm repeating so what do I know). Sometimes I just feel like shaking my fist at the whole thing, but maths is freaking beautiful. Read about primes or the history of the number zero or the infitite or read simon singh's Code Book and his book on Andrew Wiles (I think that's his name) proof of Fermat's last theorem. It seems like there are no real world applications for it but if I was trying to figure out the diameter of the earth or figure out the distance from the earth to the sun I'd need trigonometry.
Dale, you'll have to help me get my GCSE, I failed maths and I'll never become a teacher until I've got it.
Oh, I love that you did the whole thing in a little book. That must be the nicest thing to have.
I keep trying to make books, I've stitched a couple and created kinda awkward looking paperbacks but I couldn't get the hardback thing to work at all. I ended up with glue everywhere and ruining some of my nicely stitched pages :<
Do you know of a tutorial I could follow? Or could you make one?
I need to get me some waxed thread too :B
I just graduated a few months ago, and I took math 30 pure in my last semester- I don't remember any of it already! Although.. I am still haunted by horrible memories of attempting to understand logarithms and trig II..
I enjoyed reading your journal a lot. Also, I'd love to try and make my own notebook. Yours is so pretty! I love that orange fabric.
What a wonderful journal, beautifully drawn and beautifully bound! I've really enjoyed reading it.
I too failed math, and me & my buddy lou would sit in our more laissez faire art classes & illustrate our conversations- tickled to see that someone else did that too!
Hey Lucy, I really enjoyed reading your Paris journal - I was drooling over the food, particularly the macarons. What a beautiful way to record your memories! Well done and all that. :)
I did have a chuckle over you loving the greasy English breakfast. You need to come and eat in Melbourne, Australia - we've made breakfast and brunch an art form! I think you'd approve! :)
I have ordered French Milk and am just waiting on it to arrive. Woo!
I'm sad to see the Paris journal end -- I loved it! Still, I know there will be plenty of new and awesome stuff to see! You are amazing and so inspiring -- every time I think, "I don't feel like doing that right now", I end up coming onto LJ, seeing all of the work you have done, and feeling incredibly lazy, lol. (That's a good thing, I swear!) You make me think, "Get moving, sister!"
Lucy, I'm SO impressed that you made this book for the trip and actually kept it up and finished it. Standing ovation over here, with a side of slow clap. Did it drive John nuts for you to be drawing during this vacation?
How did you attach the pages to the cover? I've always wanted to make my own notebook. I have scads of fabric lying around, all large 'scraps' that are too pretty to throw away and too small to use on clothing and I would love to use them towards something like this.
Where do you buy waxed thread as well? x'D I doubt my local JoAnns would have it.
Thanks for taking the time to make and share your trip with us. I caught it in little pieces, and today I am recovering from post-wisdom teeth removal, and was therefor able to read it all in one shot.
Glad you enjoyed yourselves and ate so many delicious things.
Making my own sketchbook is something I've always wanted to do. I just recently acquired the mania to personalize every little art supply I get, doing this would be like the ultimate personalization.
Anyway, that's a gorgeous notebook. The color combination is lovely.
