Drawing December [Dec. 30th, 2010|06:04 pm]
Previous Entry Add to Memories Share Next Entry
Part of my new year's resolution is to be better about working on my book instead of falling for as many sexy freelance jobs as I do. But it's hard because I do love freelance work, and I only take super-kewl jobs. December was especially full of cover designs, poster illustrations and holiday present art. I'm (mostly) returning to regular hardcore work on Relish now, but lookit some of the crazy stuff I made while neglecting my poor book!

B the VS

My roommate and I are working our way through Buffy The Vampire Slayer during lunch and dinner breaks. This freakin' show gets better and better. Will there ever be a 90s TV show I don't love? It's too bad I'm appreciating them all post-mortem. Anyway, I had a serious itch to make some Buffy art, and also to stretch my illustrating muscles and experiment with some new techniques. So I made a contribution for this poster contest to promote the Buffy motion-comic.

(No comment on my actual opinion of "motion-comics." It does not pertain.)

Click the image to see it bigger. I was pretty satisfied with the end result, though I have no idea if I'll even place in the contest. It was mostly drawn digitally with my Cintiq (I don't usually do a lot of my ink work on there, but have recently been playing around with it more). I harangued my roommate into posing for the figure reference, as I had very specific poses in mind. It's nice to sometimes give myself permission to use photo reference. And Nora was an especially excellent Xander!

The Pobble

Instead of bedtime stories, my dad liked to read me poetry before bed when I was little. I can't tell you how many Ogden Nash poems I know by heart. But his favorite was Edward Lear, who's poems TERRIFIED me (this was at least partly due to the illustrations). I'm not sure why reading his child surreal nightmarish poems before bed made sense to my father, but Lear was a frequent bedtime reading choice. So for Christmas, I adapted his favorite (and the one that still frightens me the most), "The Pobble who Has No Toes." Read the whole creepy comic poem after the cut:

Newcity

I did the cover for this week's issue of Newcity Magazine (a local Chicago free weekly). It's their "Top 5 Of Everything" issue, and I had about 24 hours to do the whole thing from concept to completion. It was an illustration adventure!

SOM

Speaking of The Sound of Music, I made a little comic while watching it on TV the other night.

This is basically exactly what happens except he actually says, "What else does the Reverend Mother say? Tell me. Ooh, yeah. I wanna know."

Gil Says

Our landlord has had to deal with a lot this month. Our pipes froze and burst, our lock froze so badly that it totally ceased to open, and, most recently, our techno-loving boy neighbors broke both our community washer and dryer within weeks. So our landlord has been grumpier than usual (though he wasn't the one getting locked out of his freezing, water-less apartment, so I'll point out that it IS his job). So when we called to ask our landlord about the laundry situation, he told us to make a sign telling tenants to use the equipment properly. He probably should have asked a different set of tenants, but we were happy to oblige...

CLANKET

Nora made me a snuggie that looks like my cat. It's pretty much my sexiest outfit, and the only thing I will ever wear again. You are so jealous. But if you will die without your own, you should know that she does freelance, too! And teaches classes! And has an Etsy store!

Ha! That is the best sign. I remember that poem, I used to have a whole book of Edward Lear and it creeped me out but I liked it (any surprise I went on to be a goth?). Thanks for the happy reminder.

Looking at the other entries to that contest, I'd say you have an awesome chance at winning that thing.
I got so excited when I saw you post a Buffy-related piece of art. BtVS is amazing, is it not :D

90s shows rule

I spent the first 3 weeks of this month marathoning the X Files and it was arguably the best 3 weeks of my life

What season of Buffy are you on? When I first started hanging out with Dave he did the same thing, he sat me down and offered to show me a few episodes to catch me up on one of his obsessions, and soon it became mine too. I wish I'd watched it when it was actually ON, but I like TV-on-DVD so much for the ability to have marathons!

I don't think I've ever cried like I've cried from watching that show. Amazing on so many levels. And that poster is GREAT. :)

These are all great, Lucy!

Never heard the Pobble story but I can definitely imagine being frightened of such a story at a young age. Though, I can't remember my parents ever reading me stories before bed... hmm.

Love the buffy poster, makes me want to get back into watching that series again, I loved it.

I especially love the Sound of Music comic, I've always had a soft spot in my heart for that, mostly for Captain Von Trapp (dreamy) but also for Julie Andrews and her short hair. Always get the urge to chop my hair off when I watch it.

Looking forward to Relish very much! ...And now that I have written a little essay here I think I'll stop the rambling.

Oh, and If you got this far, will you be attending MoCCA this year?? (hope so!)

The Pobble Who Has No Toes is included in this two volume "Best Children's Literature" collection I've had since I was a kid, and it is the only story in there that freaks me out. And it still freaks me out, good job!

So much awesome in one post. How to absorb it all? Can I just say congratulations on your newfound Buffy addiction. I started watching the show when I was 9, and recently invested in the box set of the entire show. I hadn't seen the show in years, and it was remarkable how well it holds up, especially when every show you see nowadays has to slip some present pop-culture reference. In ten years, no one's going to care about Brangelina and Twitter will probably have been overtaken by some new internet demon. But Buffy will always be awesome.

Also, your comic terrifies me.

Yep, the Pobble is all about castration anxiety. The more you learn about Lear, the darker his nonsense fantasies become (not that they're already not pretty dark -- "The History Of The Seven Families Of The Lake Pipple-Popple" is the bleakest story I've ever seen in a childrens' book ..

I love your Buffy motion comic cover. And that Newcity cover is fantastic and, well, all your art is great. Pardon me for sounding like a, I don't know what's the word (fan?), but I felt the need to express my apprecation. :)

In less then thrity minutes I'm going to watch The Sound of Music for the first time. Yes, it's true, I've never seen the musical classic.

I really enjoyed the sound of music comic and the Edward Lear comic poem, that would wierd me out also. The cat snuggie is just awesome. Your laundry sign reminds me of all the little signs we had up at Bower house, the coop I lived at. The best one was a drawing of Gene Simmons in full make-up licking a plate. The caption underneath reads " A little tongue goes a long way. Please clean your plates"

I have always been terrified of Edward Lear as well! My creepy uncle gave me his book when I was about 10, so the source and the material were disturbing from the start. For no discernible reason I still have the book and recently attempted to pass it on to my daughter who looked at me like I was insane and declined.
