The Paris Journal Continues [Aug. 5th, 2009|03:01 pm]
More pages ahead:

Paris Journal

I hate making posts without images, but I don't have any good kitty photos at the moment,
so here is a really old picture of Mortimer.

I miss that guy! He hasn't been around much lately...
Wow, my Mortimer disguise is way less of a disguise now that I actually wear glasses kinda like those.... hm.

My Wii-Motion Plus and new Harry Potter video game came in the mail today. John bought them for me as a graduation present (and so I would bug him less all the time).
So, I finished all my work early, and... well...

Six more pages of my travel journal are posted.
It's much more London. Read on!

Saturday Nap Time

Sunday is when John and I try to get things in order-- so today, Monday, is the day when the apartment is clean, the cupboard is full of spotless dishes, my desk is swept of debris, the gardening is content, and my to-do list seems manageable and full of possibilities. Also, I'm finally unpacked. Took me long enough.

Turn your calendars, August starts tomorrow. [Jul. 31st, 2009|02:08 pm]
I somehow upset the delicate balance that is my website, so until my pal David (who kindly runs my site for me) gets back from his holiday and fixes what I mucked up, like the wizard at the end of Fantasia, I'm posting the newest pages of my Paris Journal on here.

Paris Journal )

(You should still be able to read pages 1 through 20 in the Paris Journal Gallery)

I've been working 5AM to 6PM all week.
What I've done: Scanned, colored, edited, texted and thumbnailed like a madwoman...
...and played Plants Vs. Zombies.
I have the golden sunflower trophy. Do you?

We are ready for the weekend.
Mesmerized!

PJ, continued. [Jul. 30th, 2009|02:44 pm]
Guess what?
There are three more pages up on my:

Paris Journal

And because now it's tradition, here's a picture of my cat.

Stop it, please.

Gross.
This is what she does when I am trying to work at my desk. So... So annoying.
My nose used to be enormous, before she licked it all away.

More, plus pie [Jul. 29th, 2009|02:40 pm]
As usual:
There are four more pages up on my...

Paris Journal

Today I made Banoffee Pie (I used this recipe, but I made graham cracker crust, instead), and... well.... Things got out of hand with the whipped cream...

Whipped cream nose

Okay, it has come to my attention that there are... perhaps... a few pictures of my cat on this journal.
I don't think it's becoming a problem... yet.
Here are some more pictures of my cat, and also my pie.

I have an interview with Chris Arrant over on Newsarama!
It you'd like to, you can read it here.

Paris! Hurrah! [Jul. 27th, 2009|07:05 am]
John and I are home from Paris. Jet-lagged and cheese-fatty. It was a great time.

I kept a little comic journal of my trip (in this little home-made booklet). The whole thing is about forty pages long, so I'm posting it in installments. Here's the first bit!

Au Revoir! [Jul. 7th, 2009|02:07 pm]
John and I leave for Paris in an hour.
I'm so excited, and I can't wait to get there.
I'm gonna eat so much cheese.
And I'll have some drawings to show you, when I get back!

Back in about two weeks!

Till death do us zombify! [Jun. 23rd, 2009|06:23 pm]

The rector followed up his Adam and Eve cliche'd sexist schtick with "The other reason God created woman was so that someone would be there to pass Adam the remote control!"

I swear I am not making that up.

Here is what my imagined wedding ceremony will probably look like:

No No No No.

Hey peeps! You guys should maybe give this a try. It was a nice procrastinating activity. Look, John drew one too!

One of these days I'll finally get that sweater patched... [Jun. 18th, 2009|09:17 pm]
The tres talented Phil McAndrew is doing a contest thing to challenge the competitors to draw themselves at age 100. What a totally fun thing.

I've been doing little watercolors every morning to warm up to writing. I sell most of them on my Etsy later that day, so if you're in the market for a pretty cheap little watercolor by me, then be sure to check out the store from time to time! Also, if you want to suggest things for me to paint, I'm always looking for neat ideas to get my bug satisfied in the mornings!

Here is a doodle I did and then colored.

Freakin' kitty only wants to cuddle when I'm trying to sleeeep. Or when I'm attempting to type on my keyboard and she wants to sit on it. Or when I'm reading a book and she does not approve.

It's Spendin' Time! [Jun. 11th, 2009|07:06 pm]
So I put together a couple of sales to celebrate the end of my convention run. I've spread it between two storefronts (for cheapness), and I'm trying to make some room in my studio, so things are pretty cheap-o! Check it out:

Hahaha, Edward eats kittiez. Gross.
Ah, those freakin' books are still such a source of endless make-fun-of-ability.
If anybody wants the big and empty versions of these panels
to make their own ridiculous Edward and Bella comic, you can get them here.

Heya everyone! In the next few days I'll be putting up a collection of books, paintings, portraits, T-Shirts, original artwork and prints for sale on my Etsy shop. Keep an eye out for it if you have any interest in buying some of my work to have for your very own. I'll try to get it up as soon as I can. But first, I need to recover from the last week.

I'm back from the Museum of Comics and Cartoon Arts Festival! Total fun, as usual, even though I spent two days on my feet in a tin can full of hot (and sexy) person stew. Boy, I did not realize how great air conditioning is when you fill a giant space with warm bodies.

(Photo taken from Marion Vitus's Flickr, which is also full of other great shots of the weekend!)

I love New York. In the space of four days, I ate SO well. Every meal a poem-- even the hot dog from the cart (which was the main staple of my diet for the first 8 years of my life, so I don't wanna hear a word against them). Plus I nearly got bamboozled in Times Square, which I suppose means that I've been living outside of NYC for long enough to make me a yokel (but we whined until the scammers gave our cash back, so I suppose there's New Yorker in me still).

By the end of the second day, I'd sold out of all my books, met a lotta great people, and I was being kept vaguely coherent by a little portable fan that I stole from Mark (and is, below, directed at my crotch).

(Photo taken from Arambulo's Flickr, as I didn't get any good pictures all weekend!)

I also went to fab ladies-only comics parties (though late in the evening I snuck in my boyfriend like at a pajama party). It was a super evening cocktail event for women in comics, and a load of hilarity, though I may have had one fizzy lady drink too many and started off the first day of the convention a little delicate... But it was fuuuun.

(Photo taken from Marion Vitus's Flickr)

I stayed with family friends in Jersey, in their gorgeous old house in an incredibly pretty neighborhood. I suppose my limited view of Jersey has been deceptively flattering, but I would move there in a heartbeat. Anyway, one of my hosts was a precocious, eight-year-old race-car enthusiast, who continuously impressed me with his fantastic hotwheels tracks. I made them a little watercolor to demonstrate my gratitude and to give props on his design skillz.

Before I left town, I managed to swing by one of my favorite spots; Kinokuniya! While cleaning out their supplies of pen cartridges and disposable fountain tips, I came upon a gorgeous brush pen that piqued my interest, so John bought it for me as a prezzie because he is a nice boyfriend. It is sooo great. Shorter bristles than my Pentel Pocket, and a different feel-- light and alive because it's made with real bamboo. I like it very much.

To break it in, I did some DOODLES.

Wanna see 'em? )

Braaaiiins... And MoCCA.... [Jun. 3rd, 2009|10:52 pm]
Tomorrow I leave Chicago for my hometown of New York City to do my annual pilgrimage to the Museum of Comic and Cartoon Arts Festival. I'll be at table 335, with books and prints and original artwork and love.

It's my fourth year at MoCCA, and I'm pleased to have a couple of talented peeps at my table, selling their marvelous books: I'll be joined by the delightful Mark Thisse, with his book "Legends of the Endless Sky," and I'll also have the pleasurable company of Lawrence Gullo, with his book "Vampire Deluxe!"

And in case that wasn't enough, I'll get to hang around my steady boothbabe, Johnny, as well. So many boys at Lucy's table!

These are some of my favorite people, and we'll be in an ARMORY FILLLLED with quite a few more of my favorite people, so I'm very happy to be on my way.

Now enough blabbing. Wanna see the neato print I made, special for MoCCA?

That depends, DO YOU LIKE ZOMBIES?

The FAST! [May. 28th, 2009|08:02 pm]
Official announcement: I signed my food book, "Relish" with First Second Books!
AND they wanna do it in full color! Hurray!

I thought long and hard about how to react to this news. First Second is a great publishing company, and I know they're going to treat the book right. But now I've got to roll up my sleeves and really get to work on this book. How best to re-dedicate myself to this book about my food-filled upbringing? What gesture could I make to reinstate my deep appreciation for food and eating?

Perhaps to go for a week without it?

Obsessive Compulsive Effusive [May. 25th, 2009|02:19 pm]

Happy Day-Off-From-Work! Here is a comic.

Oh, and I got a haircut.
Don't be confused-- it is really me and not a bespectacled Peppermint Patty.
Just in case you were wondering about my short hair in the comic.
Peppermint Patty haircut.

I've been back from my crazy road trip for a bit less than a week, now. It was fun times, and craziness.

Road Trip
(this is me in Mark's dad's cool old car. Killa sweet ride.)

Started out at the Toronto Comic Arts Festival. Really fun, and probably the best convention I've ever had in terms of how much I sold. Plus Mark and Erika and I got to see Michael Cera (from only half-a-block away, and within shouting distance for Erika to shreik "George Michael!" in awe.) on our way outta town. I also met some amazing peeps. Thanks again to everyone who stopped by to say hello!

Then we went on to Vermont, where I walked in my commencement ceremony at the Center for Cartoon Studies. I'm a MASTER now, fool! I got that diploma so fast, I blurred the camera, whaaat!
Graduation

Then we drove on to the Maine Comic Arts Festival, which was great fun, especially because Joe and Maris gave me cannolis and poutine. It was made all the more special by an appearance by CAT DANCER. Yesss.
I also got to meet longtime LJ pals, [info]derien and [info]eor, and hang out a bit in pretty Portland Maine.* I think this convention is very nice, and going to get better. I recommend it!
MECAF
*In the last two months, I've been to comic arts festivals in Portland OR and Portland ME.
Opposite ends of the country! Woo!

Then it was two days of solid driving back across the country. On the way, Mark and John and I stopped for a bit to stare at Niagra Falls and see the raaaainbow that it made. (not pictured)
Road trip
(note my totally stylin' clippie sunglasses. Yeaaah.)

Next up, the Museum of Comic and Cartoon Arts Festival in NYC. And that'll be the last convention I attend this season (phew), so please come and visit me there! Boy, four conventions doesn't seem like a lot, but PHEW.

I'm trying an experiment this week. I don't want to give too much away, because I'm making a little comic about it, and also part of my reasons for doing it wont be announced fully until next week. But if you're too intrigued to wait, then you can read about my progress on my Twitter account.

Comics starring ME... but not BY me! [May. 15th, 2009|01:11 pm]
I have been ON THE ROAD for a whole week!

Mark and I drove from the midwest to Toronto last week, for the Toronto Comic Arts Fest. I didn't get any photos this time, because I forgot my camera and plus it was crayzee. But I hear tell there are some here!

There is a comic on Mark's Livejournal, by Mark, about our first few hours in Toronto (I'm in it, too). We stayed in three separate hostels over the course of our weekend, so the next few pages of this comic are going to ROCK.

We nomad-ed around town with Erika Moen, who's comic this week ALSO features me! She discusses the quirks of John's and my recent trip to visit her and do the Stumptown Comics Fest in Portland, OR. The air mattress and creepily empty strip-club I didn't mind so much as the hungover bike odyssey or the lady who apparently wanted me to pee in front of her...

Read alllll about it at Erika's Dar Comic Page!

TCAF was great fun. I was so delighted to meet a great bunch of people who kindly came up to introduce themselves or say hi! One such awesome encounter gifted me with an original comic, starring MEEE. Gawd, the path to my heart is so easily trodden. Beto Gomez gave me this amazing gem, scanned and posted without permission (sorry and thank you, Beto!) HERE.

Now I'm in Vermont at the Center for Cartoon Studies, awaiting my graduation on Saturday. I passed my thesis review (yay!) and I'll be walking across the stage to pick up my MASTERS of FINE ARTS. Hurray!

Mark and I have spent much of the week in Vermont sleeping off the 18 hours in the car, combined with the hectic convention weekend previous. We have another 3 hour drive in store after the ceremony, to attend the Maine Comic Arts Festival on Sunday, followed by 18 hours back to the flatlands of the cornfed. Phew!

We've also been doodling a whole bunch while we rest up.

One of these days, I'm going to snap and really do it. [May. 6th, 2009|12:05 pm]

You guys, those vitamins... were so... so delicious.
Why would they make them so good if they didn't want you to eat them all in one sitting?
I think my favorite was "Fred."

Ah, childhood fashion.

I wish I had a picture of me wearing my "I'm Bart Simpson, who the hell are you?" T-Shirt. Alas-- and mysteriously, because I wore the damn thing all the time-- I couldn't track down one photo. I did, however, locate evidence of me wearing a couple t-shirts of unparalleled oldness. And a photo of me wearing my Jughead Jones hat.... backwards.
Rockin' the overall shorts. )

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Hey! I'm gonna be at The Toronto Comic Arts Festival this weekend!
Then I'm gonna be at The Maine Comic Arts Festival the following Sunday!
In between those things, I will probably receive my degree from graduate school. So I'll go to one convention as a bachelor of fine arts, and attend the next one as a MASTER.
(thesis approval pending)
Meanwhile, I'm gettin' a haircut. It's all "wooly mammoth" up in here.
